May 19, 2009 – Water Boarding

This originally was going to be more extensive with interrogators and tables and papers around. I had spoken to Ken Culotta about this we had discussed crazy things going on involving the interrogators torturing themselves to stop hearing Biden speak. As I drew it I realized I just didn’t have the room to draw even a few people and have it make sense. It’s not easy getting identifiable interrogators in the background dunking themselves in the water boarding bin. And playing Russian roulette. So I cut them out, extended the text and ended up with a mediocre cartoon.

May 18, 2009 – Dr. Seuss is the antithesis of Darwin
May 19th, 2009 by Rob Smith, Jr.

I came across this story from a friend on Facebook.

As someone who has extensively studied the history and ideas and ideals of evolutionary theory, I find this fellows column and what he writes about rather hilarious. To imagine Darwin, or any theorist embracing natural selection to say,” Let’s save WhoVille.” is preposterous. The whole idea of evolution is some stay, some go. That’s how you grow. If you leave room for emotion, you get in the way of the process that would otherwise occur.

Geisel’s stories were doused in sentimental jib-jab. I love his stories as the stories they are. But in the context of heralding natural selection, Geisel wrote to thwart it. He was pretty persistent in the idea of all must be saved. That is neither natural nor evolutionary.

Folks like Darwin, Linnaeus, Buffon, Lamarck, plus so many others invested much time and effort over long periods of time to lead to theories still tested today. The more they learned the more their ideas had semblance of sense. It was time and effort. Trial and error. That is what produced volumes of material. All far more extensive and involved than a Geisel short children’s book.

I believe to be creative it takes that time and effort. That trial and error. The more you learn and try to know the more creative you can be. It’s much like in Scrabble. You get a random series of letters and are supposed to assemble a word out of it. You can only piece together words, if you know the words beforehand. The article rambled more about making up the words. Points aren’t earned with made up words. You have to work to know those possibilities. Reading and learning.

Creativity comes from the more knowledge gained the more you can play in your head to then pick up pencil, paintbrush, trumpet, dance shoes and explore the possibilities with the knowledge gained. Painting a building takes knowledge of building and some sense of architecture. Most artists use reference for such. The more they know beforehand , the less the reference is needed. Someone lacking that information is flat out of luck. They’ll just make it up and the final piece will show that lack of knowledge. Thus the informed trumps the ill informed. Move the weaker away as the stronger survives.

Evolutionary theory is hardly understood today. The media and special interest groups have watered it down to be about humans coming from monkeys. Something Darwin himself only touched on in his volumes written. Or you have those on the left trying to fit their bleeding heart square peg in the evolutionary hypothesis round hole. More and more Darwin’s brutal theories are being fluffed for a more cry baby audience. It is sad that these anniversaries are being recognized as the bastardization of Darwin’s work is continued. My theory is that better left alone or have it destroyed.

May 15, 2009 – Pelosi Spooked

Nancy, just ignore those dark cars following you everywhere.

To see the cartoon at Glenn Beck’s site click here.

She reminds me more and more of my mother, who, as she got older, seemed to be more and more detached from reality. My mother also had trouble getting some sentences out without a stumble or two. I wonder what Pelosi’s medical condition is.

Below is the penciling prior to ink and color. I worked real loose again with the pencils ’cause I was hoping to give the finished art a looser look. In the end, it’s all rather tight. That seemed to work better getting the idea of lighting. I was going to have a yellow glow from the light above Pelosi’s head, but the glow was taking away from the somewhat eerie feeling i wanted.

I essentially have two panels happening. One of Pelosi at the door and the other of something speaking in the shadows.

How do you all think it worked out in the end?

May 12, 2009 – Spiking Tourism
May 12th, 2009 by Rob Smith, Jr.

What a dopey move! Referring to this story. I’m a Republican and I’d rather not see government funds for tourism either. BUT, if you take this away, you can kiss the New Port Richey economy and specifically Tarpon Springs, good-bye as Disney, Universal and the beach communities take over with advertising. All to undo the wonderful recent actions to spotlight the ENTIRE state and it’s wonders (Been There Haven’t Done That). I would like to hope that local government would step up to the plate for this. Most have been busy with corporate welfare to developers and claim to be broke.

If Fasano wants to end stupid spending, let’s stop funding developers with tax-payer dollars. Let’s be strict about concurrency and abide by the Growth Management act so that the developers pay for schools, roads and the like.

Our state has too much to offer to throw it away and we’ve got to keep tourism to keep economic levels that have buoyed us for over a century. Folks should be visiting the ENTIRE state not just silly kiddie amusement parks. That unfortunately means us taxpayers helping out.

May 11, 2009 – Crist for Senate?
May 11th, 2009 by Rob Smith, Jr.

In this article in The Hill today, apparently Florida Governor Charlie Crist is going to announce his bid for the US Senate. I really question the move. As written in the story, Crist has upset conservatives, including me. From the mentioned cuddling up to Obama’s insane fiscal moves to the US Sugar deal to the pact with the Seminoles to the current odd ad campaign to support rasing taxes to save people’s lives.

I find myself disagreeing more with Crist than agreeing. Coming in waving a moderate/conservative flag and acting more like a moderate/liberal. On top of that he’s become reeeeeeal wobbly with his actions. The US Sugar deal is an amazing achievement. Yet it’ll cost a lot and, with a backward glance, so far restoration of the Kissimmee River and Everglades is, to me, extremely disappointing. I haven’t seen him step forward with a very focussed action plan to make sure this time we’ll move forward and not just fill consultant’s pockets. Does this deal add up to anything?

Same with the “Seminole Compact”. The gaming people, not necessarily the Seminoles, win big. What about the seniors, whose future has been challenged by the economy? They will be further seduced to dump their Social Security checks into the pockets of the gaming companies. I don’t think the government should step in and protect them. But it’s far worse that the same government set the seniors up as a mark.

Though I have my problems with Crist as Governor, he could be a powerhouse in the Senate versus  Martinez who flittered away his position (His typical M.O.- He did the same thing at H.U.D. and the Orange County Commission). The U.S. Senate is in need of strong Republicans right now, Crist could be that. He could also, based on his current actions, repeat Martinez.

I’m not sure I would support him for Governor again. I don’t know if I can support him for Senate. I know I’m disappointed in too much of what he has done so far. I know many conservatives who feel in a similar way. To me he would have a better chance to regain the Governor’s seat than the Senate.I do think this is all part of a larger plan that Rep. Chair and friends have. I believe they have someone else they want as Governor. I’m sue we’ll know who shortly.

Somehow J.E.B. Bush fits in all this. He’s doing what he’s done in the past just before he tackles a political race –  become very obvious to the media. I feel very strongly that the Republican party must give the Bush family a very long rest before getting back into politics. The media and the current President has and is giving the Bush family a very bad name. Too bad you can’t sue them for defamation of character. But that’s politics.

Which might be worse? Biden….or Hillary????

Click on the cartoon to go to Glenn’s site and the gallery of cartoons.

I do think Biden wasn’t that out of line with his comments about keeping in a “confined space” during the flu scare. He’s just not playing along with political correctness. What does bother me is that mostly conservative media made a big deal of it and the rest generally skated past it. The heralds of political correctness decided not to be this time. Another example that the heralds might just undermine the reason for their existence.

I’m going to try and use those tele-prompters whenever I can.

I worked pretty loose this time. The pencils are below.

May 3, 2009 – Jack Kemp

I was very sorry to hear of such a bedrock of conservatism as Jack Kemp passing away.

I first met Jack Kemp during the Dole campaign at a rally in Orlando at Church Street Station in 1996. Above is a momentum of the time.

The last I met him was during the McCain campaign last October. He was doing a bus tour with radio legend, Pat Summerall. Below are photos of his stop at our McCain H.Q. in Ocala, Florida.

When you don’t respect the boundaries around your house, anything can and will come in. Folks put up fences, hedges, walls, alarms, etc. to keep themselves and their families safe. We care more about our personal property borders than our national one. You need one to keep the other.
