June 26, 2009 – Is Michael Jackson Gone?
Jun 29th, 2009 by Rob Smith, Jr.

2009-0626-michaeljackson-ch

Here two veterans of this 9 year run, Jacob and Taylor, return with some thoughts. An unexpected figure in a coat on a bench has a response. “Don’t believe everything you hear.” ??? The individual in the chair I garbed as Michael Jackson.

The reason: As rumors of Elvis still being alive abounded in the early ’80s, I was hearing all of these odd stories of Michael Jackson. I had also heard the idea of Walt Disney being encased in ice. Who would or could pull off such an act? Someone with a lot of money, friends and a vivid imagination.  From what I hear about Jackson, and the impressions when I got to meet him twice, was that Jackson was just the sort to pull such a gag. I watched as he shut down amusement parks just so he could be a customer. I heard the stories of his Neverland Ranch and his fascination with everything childlike.  His glove fixation and recreating his skin tone. Reality is something he visited but didn’t dwell.

Since the early ’80s I’ve thought that if Jackson was ever to die early, that I might not believe it. He probably has died. But if someone tells me Elvis is roaming the planet or Disney is in a meat locker under Space Mountain, then I’ll counter with my theories of Jackson.

June 23, 2009 – Florida Turtle Tunnel
Jun 28th, 2009 by Rob Smith, Jr.

2009-0623-turtletunnel-chriApparently part of this project has already been done. Nevertheless, it’s listed in the stimulus stuff. I can’t see any turtles being for that much money spent.

Most of this was created in the computer which really skyrocketed the time it took to do it. I get too detailed oriented when working in the computer…Even after 24 years of using them!

June 19, 2009 – Fly specks

Obama can’t have strong words about threats, but he can kill a fly…in a bit of melodrama. My feeling is that the reaction of those above is the shaking of heads and just how to play with this weakling U.S. President.

June 16, 2009 – Obama’s Golf Games!

This guy is slick! How can you golf during a tumultuous weekend like this and the press doesn’t interrupt you? This cartoon almost seems to support the President’s activities. I hope it leaps to someone’s mind that Bush was pummeled for even holding golf clubs during less trying times. Is Obama the new Teflon President?

Below is the pencil drawing. It was tough getting the motion lines to work in the color version.

June 12, 2009 – Czars!

With Obama,  a Czar is born every day!

Below are the pencils to the cartoon. You can see just how powerful color is in bringing this message across.

June 9, 2009 – Stimulus Package in Action.
Jun 13th, 2009 by Rob Smith, Jr.

stimulusbill-chris

I actually penciled this back in February and inked it on an airplane going from London to Washington, D.C. I waited on this to use while we were gone. I sent this from our hotel room in Charleston, South Carolina.

This what I see happening. Stimulus money going to a select group of workers in the road building industry, while the rest of us are stuck in the traffic snarls they cause. I’ve been there and watched this stuff happen. Much worse that even more of my tax dollars are used to perpetuate these sweetheart deals of unneeded, costly roads that go on for miles so that the road builder makes an even larger profit.

June 5, 2009 – Happy Atheists!

No rough sketch for this one. This was the second editorial cartoon I’ve drawn entirely in the computer.I had two other ideas both reflecting on Obama’s odd speech about the mid-east. Below is one of the two. I was going to draw Obama with heavy boots stomping through egg shells. Then I saw via Twitter a survey of religious views that there are some three times as many atheists as muslims in the U.S. Unfortunately, I sw this very late and really didn’t assemble the cartoon well.

June 2, 2009 – Cyber Czar
Jun 2nd, 2009 by Rob Smith, Jr.

2009-0602-cyberczar-blog

Twitterer DarkKnight brought to my attention that Obama is working on creating a new level in bureaucracy involving something called a Cyber Czar. DarkKnight wondered if this might be the beginning to the introduction of an internet tax. Good point! For someone who represents a political group that claims to value free expression, what else would they be up to but to restrict it!

So Obama adds another dpartment, hires more employees and soon the workforce will be depleted just by Obama expanding the government so much!

May 29, 2009 – Everglades Pythons!
Jun 1st, 2009 by Rob Smith, Jr.

2009-0529-python-blog

Above is the final art of Friday’s cartoon on Glenn Beck. To see it there click here. Below is the very rough pencil drawing. I’m pretty knowledgeable of the environs of the Everglades. So I filled in the landscape when I inked. Still I should probably pencil a bit tighter.

The pythons are loose and it’s actually a very serious matter. These guys eat everything and spit out what can’t be digested. According to State wildlife officials in a story last year, there’s little to stop the migration of pythons throughout the state of Florida due to their ability to reproduce like rabbits, lack of natural predators and the difficulty in finding and killing them. As that migration north occurs, many native and non-native wildlife will begin to disappear as these critters literally eat their way into the Southeastern U.S. The prediction is that within fifty years these giant snakes will be well embedded throughout Florida.

What to do about it? Well, it’s like those immigrating into the U.S. that demand we speak their language and they have little interest in learning ours. Aggressiveness rules. If we in Florida handle the python issue as we handle other aggressiveness into the country, we’re in big trouble. I doubt that we will change signage to add a python language or that the U.S. government will belittle everyone else in favor of the pythons. However, if we just sit back and drink beer and watch football and don’t react to this threat, we could have interesting neighbors in our own backyard.
